      There are precious things beneath the Earth

At the end of January 2015, I had an opportunity to participate in the opening ceremony of Art Exchange Exhibition Thai – Polish at CMUArtCenter, ChiangMaiUniversity. There were many visitors and artists from Thailand and Poland. Thai National Artists were the guests of honor for this opening ceremony. A dazzling night as it was the first day of the exhibition. It was a cooperative effort between professors of the faculty of Fine Arts and a team of lecturers who participated in the exchange of education programs and field trips in Poland. As I remember, two national artists Kamol Tassananchalee and Decha Warashoon were invited to that opening ceremony as well.

In this issue, I would like to present an interesting Thai artist whom I met for the first time at the Art Exchange Exhibition. He works as a lecturer for many universities in Thailand. His profession is somewhat different from other lecturers in Thailand since he was an ambassador of art in Thailand to many countries with his intention to elevate Thai Art with exhibitions and workshops connected all over the world. With his experience as an alumnus of UCLA,USA, he selected artists including freelancers from many institutes to attend workshops and exhibitions overseas. Not so simple for artists from Thailand to use their own budget to be visiting artists abroad but with his support, artists from Asia would eventually work together.

Wattanachot’s works are remarkable and his trains of thought are shown in a series of artworks that reveal a harmonious mixture of social and natural environments. He is keen on teaching arts to students and is regarded as avant-garde. After coming back to his homeland, he brought what he saw abroad and created new, imaginative pieces of artwork. Looking at his works, we can see the identity, stability and richness of his imagination. He received many awards from various exhibitions. He also had his own studio called 56 Art Studio in NakhonSawanProvince.

Here is the interview:

JY: What is the major inspiration in your painting?

WT: Most of my inspiration comes from both social and natural environments that I have encountered throughout my entire life. Firstly, the “Mask” collection reflects the different personalities of people in society. There are good and bad people. The bad ones try to hide their faces under the mask made of human skin. (Most works in this collection were prints and drawings but some are paintings). Secondly, the “Oriental Mind” collection was mostly made with handmade paper. I brought many objects that were used in daily life by people of different ethnicity in Asia. Religions, beauty, traditions and cultures were intentionally exhibited to show the spirit of Asian races that preserved their long-lasting way of life and cultures. Thirdly, the “Dreamscape” collection was inspired by my trips to many countries. I saw breathtaking scenery and experienced the serenity of nature. I absorbed that atmosphere in my mind and recreated it. The final and latest collection I like to tell you is “Earth & Sky” that is inspired by the stories from my son who is studying geology. There are precious things beneath the Earth such as energy, minerals and gems but they are hidden and cannot be seen by our eyes. Earth, water, wind and fire are four elements that have inseparable relationships with everything in the world.

JY: Tell me about yourself, your education and career?

WT: I was born on 18 September 1960 in NakhonSawanProvince in the upper central region of Thailand. I received a diploma from ThaivichitsilpSchool and an advanced diploma in Printmaking from Poh Chang Academy of Arts. For Bachelor’s degree in Arts studies, I applied toSrinakharinwirotUniversity, Bangsaen Campus in ChonburiProvince (The university was renamed to Burapha University in 1990). After graduation, I went to the USA and got a certificate of Computer Graphics from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Later on, I acquired an honorary Master’s degree in Design from RajabhatUniversity, Nakhon Sawan. For my career, during the period of two years from 1986 – 1988 I was a lecturer in the Arts Studies department, Faculty of Humanity, SrinakharinwirotUniversity,PhitsanulokProvince. After that I spent time on many other things apart from teaching students. From 1992 – 2000 was the time I worked for various companies.

Apart from work in private companies, I was also a guest lecturer for Rajabhat University, Nakhon Sawan Province and Burapha University in Chonburi Province.

- Excellent alumnus of the faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, BuraphaUniversity .   

- Excellent alumnus of Poh Chang Academy of Arts (Rajamankala Rattanakosin University of Technology).

- First Award in Painting from Five universities’ Art exhibition at Tali City, China.

- Gold medal award from Jeonbuk Art Biennale, Korea.

- Outstanding award from Shanghai International Art Exhibition, Shanghai City, China.

Art exhibitions in the future

- Art Exchange Exhibition Thai – Nepal at Kathmandu City, Nepal during October 2018.

- SINERGIA International Painting Exhibition at Tijuanna City, Mexico during March 2019.

- Selected as one of the seven artists from seven countries (Thailand, USA,Japan, Poland, Germany,India and Italy) to work and exhibit works in Napoli City, Italy during April 2019.

- Invited to give lectures and exhibit works at art institute at Warsaw City, Poland during May 2019.

ในช่วงปลายเดือนมกราคม พ.ศ. 2558 ดิฉันได้มีโอกาสไปเข้าร่วมงานพิธีเปิดArt Exchange Exhibition Thai – Polish ที่หอศิลป์มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ มีผู้มาเที่ยวชมมากมายรวมทั้งศิลปินจากประเทศไทยและโปแลนด์ ศิลปินแห่งชาติเป็นแขกผู้มีเกียรติในงานพิธีเปิดครั้งนี้ ค่ำคืนที่เต็มไปด้วยสีสันเป็นงานนิทรรศการวันแรก งานครั้งนี้เป็นความร่วมมือกันระหว่างคณาจารย์คณะวิจิตรศิลป์ และทีมงานอาจารย์ผู้สอนที่เคยเข้าร่วมโครงการแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้และการไปทัศนศึกษาที่ประเทศโปแลนด์ เท่าที่ดิฉันจำได้มีศิลปินแห่งชาติสองท่าน คือท่านอาจารย์กมล ทัศนาญชลี และท่านอาจารย์เดชา วราชุน ได้รับเชิญให้มาร่วมงานพิธีเปิดครั้งนี้ด้วย

ดิฉันอยากนำเสนอศิลปินไทยที่น่าสนใจผู้หนึ่งที่ดิฉันได้พบที่งานนิทรรศการศิลปะครั้งนั้นเป็นครั้งแรก อาจารย์วัฒนโชติทำงานเป็นอาจารย์ให้กับมหาวิทยาลัยในประเทศไทยหลายแห่ง งานอาชีพของอาจารย์วัฒนโชติค่อนข้างต่างจากอาจารย์คนอื่นๆในประเทศไทยเพราะว่า น่าจะกล่าวได้ว่าท่านเป็นทูตด้านศิลปะในประเทศไทยให้กับหลายๆ ประเทศด้วยความตั้งใจที่จะยกระดับงานศิลปะของไทยโดยใช้งานนิทรรศการและเวิร์คช็อปให้เชื่อมโยงกันไปทั่วโลกด้วยประสบการณ์ที่เคยเป็นศิษย์เก่าของมหาวิทยาลัยUCLAสหรัฐอเมริกาที่สามารถสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษได้ดีเมื่อได้เป็นผู้คัดเลือกอาจารย์ที่สอนศิลปะรวมทั้งศิลปินอิสระจากหลายๆ สถาบันให้เข้าร่วมงานเวิร์คช็อปและนิทรรศการต่างๆ ในต่างประเทศ ไม่ใช่เรื่องง่ายที่ศิลปินจากประเทศไทยจะออกค่าใช้จ่ายของตนเองเพื่อไปเป็นศิลปินผู้ไปเยือนยังต่างประเทศ แต่ด้วยการสนับสนุนของทุกฝ่าย ศิลปินจากทวีปเอเชียท้ายที่สุดก็ได้ทำงานร่วมกัน

ผลงานของอาจารย์วัฒนโชติมีความโดดเด่นและกระบวนความคิดยังได้แสดงออกมาในผลงานหลายชุดที่เปิดเผยให้เห็นการผสมผสานอย่างกลมกลืนของสังคมและสิ่งแวดล้อมตามธรรมชาติ อาจารย์
วัฒนโชติมีความชำนาญในการสอนศิลปะให้กับนักศึกษาและได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นศิลปินระดับแนวหน้า หลังจากที่กลับมายังประเทศบ้านเกิดก็ได้นำสิ่งที่ได้พบเห็นในต่างประเทศมาสร้างผลงานชิ้นใหม่ที่มีเต็มไปด้วยจินตนาการ เมื่อมองดูผลงานที่ออกมาแล้ว ก็จะเห็นตัวตน ความมั่นคงและความร่ำรวยในจินตนาการ อาจารย์วัฒนโชติผ่านการได้รับรับรางวัลจากงานนิทรรศการศิลปะต่างๆมากมาย และยังได้เปิดสตูดิโอแสดงผลงานของตนเอง ในชื่อว่า 56 Art Studio ที่จังหวัดนครสวรรค์

ต่อไปนี้เป็นบทสัมภาษณ์

จานีน:อะไรคือแรงบันดาลใจหรือความสนใจในงานศิลปะด้านจิตรกรรม

วัฒโชติ: แรงบันดาลส่วนใหญ่เกิดจากสภาพแวดล้อมที่ได้สัมผัสด้วยตัวเอง ทั้งด้านสังคมและธรรมชาติ เช่น

ชุด " Mask " เป็นการสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงบุคคลิคภาพของผู้คนในสังคมที่มีความหลากหลาย ทั้งดี ทั้งชั่ว ทั้งเลว แต่พยายามที่จะปกปิด ซ่อนเร้นอยู่ภายใต้หน้ากากหนังมนุษย์ (ชุดนี้เน้นทำงานในเทคนิคภาพพิมพ์และวาดเส้นเป็นส่วนใหญ่ จะมีเพ้นท์บางส่วน)

ชุด " Oriental mind "เป็นงานเทคนิคสื่อผสม ส่วนใหญ่จะทำลงบนกระดาษทำเอง (Handmade Paper) โดยนำวัสดุต่างๆ ที่เป็นของใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันของชนชาติต่างๆในทวีปเอเซีย ทั้งเรื่องศาสนา ความเชื่อ ความงาม ศรัทธา ประเพณี และพิธีกรรมต่างๆ มาจัดวางแสดงให้เห็นถึงจิตวิญญาณของชนชาติเอเซีย ที่มีวิถีชีวิต

และวัฒนธรรมเก่าแก่สืบทอดกันมาอย่างยาวนาน

ชุด " Dreamscape "เป็นการทำงานที่ได้แรงบันดาลใจจากการเดินทางไปในที่ต่างๆ หลายๆประเทศ ได้เห็นภูมิทัศน์อันงดงาม แปลกตา น่าทึ่ง และได้สัมผัสกับความสงบสุขของธรรมชาติ ซึมซับบรรยากาศไว้ และนำมาสร้างขึ้นใหม่ตามจินตนาการส่วนตัว

ชุด " Earth & Sky " ชุดนี้เป็นงานที่สร้างขึ้นล่าสุด มีแรงบันดาลจากคำบอกเล่าของลูกชายที่เรียนในด้านธรณีวิทยา กล่าวถึงสิ่งมีค่าต่างๆภายใต้พื้นโลก ทั้งพลังงาน แร่ธาตุ อัญมณี ฯลฯ แต่ถูกซ่อนเร้น ไม่สามารถมองเห็นได้ด้วยตาเปล่า พสุธาและอากาศเป็นส่วนสำคัญของโลกธาตุ หรือธาตุทั้ง 4 (ดิน น้ำ ลม ไฟ) ซึ่งมีความสัมพันธ์กันอย่างแยกไม่ออกของสรรพสิ่งในโลกใบนี้

จานีน: อยากให้เล่าเรื่องเกี่ยวกับตัวเอง การศึกษา อาชีพการงาน

วัฒนโชติ: ผมเกิดในวันที่ 18 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2503 ในจังหวัดนครสวรรค์ทางภาคกลางตอนบนของประเทศไทย ผมได้รับวุฒิประกาศนียบัตรวิชาชีพจากโรงเรียนไทยวิจิตรศิลป์ และวุฒิประกาศนียบัตรวิชาชีพชั้นสูงในสาขาวิชาภาพพิมพ์จากวิทยาลัยเพาะช่าง สำหรับวุฒิปริญญาตรีในสาขาศิลปะศึกษา ผมได้สมัครเรียนที่

มหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ วิทยาเขตบางแสนในจังหวัดชลบุรี (มหาวิทยาลัยเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยบูรพาในปี พ.ศ. 2533) หลังจากที่เรียนจบผมเดินทางไปยังสหรัฐอเมริกาและได้รับประกาศนียบัตรวิชาคอมพิวเตอร์กราฟิกจาก University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) ในเวลาต่อมาผมได้รับวุฒิ

ปริญญาโทกิติมศักดิ์จากมหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฎนครสวรรค์ สำหรับในด้านอาชีพการงาน ในช่วงเวลาสองปีระหว่างพ.ศ. 2529 – 2531 ผมเป็นอาจารย์สอนในภาควิชาศิลปศึกษา คณะมนุษยศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ จังหวัดพิษณุโลกหลังจากที่ผมใช้เวลาทำสิ่งต่างๆ นอกจากการสอนหนังสือให้กับนักศึกษา ตั้งแต่ปี

พ.ศ. 2535 – 2543 เป็นเวลาที่ผมทำงานให้กับบริษัทอีกหลายแห่งเป็นอาร์ตไดเร็คเตอร์ให้กับหนังสือพิมพ์ผู้จัดการ และบริษัท KL&P (Asia) เป็นครีเอทีฟไดเร็คเตอร์ให้กับบริษัท Aspac 21เป็นกรรมการผู้จัดการให้กับบริษัทQUARTET นอกเหนือไปจากการทำงานในบริษัทเอกชน ผมยังเป็นอาจารย์พิเศษให้กับมหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฎ จังหวัดนครสวรรค์และมหาวิทยาลัยบูรพา จังหวัดชลบุรี
